Opera is a code-name for 3DO Multiplayer platform. In it's basics it has following parts:

  • CPU
  • MADAM (Memory Address Decoder Access Manager)
  • CLIO (Controller of Link and Input/Output)
  • CDROM Drive

Later versions of Opera has MADAM and CLIO combined under one package - Anvil.

On other sections of this wiki we will take a deep look into the Opera hardware. Until then -- let's take a look inside MADAM and CLIO


MADAM is an AT&T FPGA and has following parts:

  • Memory manager
  • DMA controller
  • CEL engine
  • FENCE memory access protection
  • PBUS controller & DMA
  • MATRIX coprocessor

CLIO is an AT&T FPGA and has following parts:

  • Interrupt controller
  • Watchdog
  • DMA controller
  • Timers
  • VDLP
  • DSP
  • XBUS
